North Korea announces launch of beach resort for unexpected reason and guests are expected to arrive very soon

Considering your next vacation spot? Why not put North Korea on your travel bucket list?

With a new luxurious resort opening soon, this dream could become a reality sooner than you think.

The country's supreme leader, Kim Jong-un, has launched an enormous new resort on North Korea's east coast, capable of hosting up to 20,000 guests. Who knows, perhaps you'll be one of them in the future.

The Wonson Kalma coastal resort has been developed with a surprising goal in mind: tourism. This new venture, described by Pyongyang as a 'world-class cultural resort,' aims to transform the area into a thriving tourist destination.

Before the adventurous among you start packing your bags and searching flights, be aware that it currently welcomes only domestic and Russian travellers. Naturally.

The Wonson Kalma resort opened with much celebration last month, akin to an Olympic ceremony. The event was attended by Kim Jong-un, his wife Ri Sol-ju, their daughter Kim Ju-ae, and Russia’s ambassador to North Korea.

The resort is now welcoming its first guests, who were seen happily enjoying the beach and pool.

Interestingly, Kim Jong-un was also present by the poolside, observing guests enjoy their state-approved leisure activities.

No pressure on the guests, of course.

This opulent new destination also offers a waterpark, a beach promenade, bike rentals (including tandem bikes), golf carts for easy transportation, and state-of-the-art technology.

Images released by state media portray the resort as family-friendly, with parents, children, and elderly guests all enjoying its amenities.

North Korean media has hailed the event as 'one of the greatest successes this year,' and the state hopes it will eventually draw international attention to the coastal area as a tourist hotspot.

However, due to the current ban on international travel, it seems unlikely to open to travelers beyond Russian tour groups in the near future.

Since the pandemic, the nation has imposed extremely strict border controls, allowing few travelers in, and much of its tourism revenue has stemmed from political alliances.

Prior to the Covid-19 lockdowns, the majority of tourists were from China, a trend that has declined as political relations have cooled in recent years. Russian tourists, however, remain welcome, with the first group arriving last year amid strengthening military ties between the two nations, according to ABC News.
